For a lot of us, a proper holiday means bringing the dog. Not leaving them with someone else and hoping for the best - actually bringing them, and watching them have a holiday that's as enjoyable as ours
Brook Cottage Shepherd Huts is a dog-friendly luxury glamping retreat on the Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales, and we're proud to have received Visit Wales' Pets Welcome award. Two of our five luxury handcrafted shepherd huts - Joan and Angharad - are available for guests travelling with dogs, and every canine guest receives their own welcome gift on arrival.
Whether you're here as a couple, on your own, or simply in need of a few days somewhere beautiful, your dog is genuinely welcome - not just tolerated. Here's how to make the most of a shepherds hut holiday for both of you.
Help them settle in
A dog‑friendly shepherd huts holiday works best when your dog feels at home.
A new environment - however lovely - can take a little adjusting to. Bringing their own bed, a familiar blanket and a favourite toy gives your dog something reassuring to come back to at the end of the day. And if you do arrive and realise you've forgotten something, just ask - as dog owners ourselves, we keep a few things on hand to lend out if needed. After a long walk through open countryside, there's something deeply satisfying about watching them finally curl up - properly worn out, completely content.

Embrace the mud
The fields, coastal paths and hillsides of the Llŷn Peninsula are exactly the kind of terrain dogs were made for. The mess that sometimes follows is part of the deal. A quick paw wipe before coming inside keeps the hut comfortable, and if they've had a swim or been caught in a shower, getting them dried off means they'll be ready for the next adventure sooner rather than later.
Get out and explore together
This part of North Wales is exceptional walking country. The Wales Coast Path runs nearby, with stretches of dramatic clifftop and quiet cove that reward a slower pace. Inland, the peaks of Snowdonia offer more ambitious days out for those who want them. Pack water and treats for your dog, a flask for yourself, and take your time - the Llŷn Peninsula is the kind of place that genuinely improves when you're not in a hurry.
Closer to Brook Cottage, the countryside paths and woodlands make for easy, unhurried walks at any time of day. A dog-friendly glamping break lends itself naturally to this kind of rhythm: out in the morning, back for lunch, out again in the afternoon if you feel like it.
Make time for doing nothing
The best moments of a break like this often aren't the big walks or the day trips - they're the quieter ones. And even the most energetic dogs appreciate a little downtime. Sitting out on the porch of your shepherd hut while your dog stretches out beside you. The log burner lit inside, the fire pit going outside, and absolutely nothing that needs doing. Dogs are remarkably good at this, and their contentment tends to be contagious.
A word on the site and the surrounding landscape
Brook Cottage is a fully stock-fenced site with a cattle grid at the entrance, so you won't need to worry about your dog wandering. That said, because of the layout of the site, the individual huts don't have a fully enclosed space of their own - so a lead in the grounds is required at all times. Given that we're surrounded by working farmland with livestock in the neighbouring fields, this is something we feel strongly about, and it keeps the experience stress-free for everyone.
Inside the huts, we ask that dogs stay off the beds - partly for the comfort of future guests, and partly so you can enjoy crisp, freshly made bedding yourself. A dog bed in a warm shepherd hut with a log burner going is, we'd argue, a pretty good alternative.
It's a genuinely unspoiled part of the world, and a little mindfulness around wildlife and livestock helps keep it that way - for your dog, for the animals around them, and for whoever comes to enjoy it next.
