A new way to stay at Brook Cottage Shepherd Huts

We're delighted to share some news: Brook Cottage is now partnered with FarFrom, the work-for-accommodation platform connecting UK hosts with travellers looking to stay somewhere new in exchange for a few hours' help each day.

It's a small change on paper, but one that fits closely with how we've always tried to run this place.

What FarFrom does

FarFrom matches travellers with hosts across the UK for work-for-accommodation stays. Volunteers browse listings, apply to hosts whose work and setting appeal to them, and if it's a good match, they stay for free in exchange for a few hours of work a day: gardening, animal care, maintenance, hospitality, or creative projects, depending on the host. It's a simple idea, built on trust on both sides, and it's one we think suits a small, hands-on business like ours.

What it means for our guests-turned-volunteers

For anyone who comes to us through FarFrom, it's a chance to stay somewhere different and get to know a part of Wales they may not have had the change to visit before. At Brook Cottage, that means the same shepherd hut experience our regular guests love: a boutique shepherds hut with a cosy wood burner, an en-suite, a  stunning view over the lake and out towards Yr Eifl. It's simply arrived at differently, in exchange for a few hours of shared effort each day rather than a room rate.

And there's plenty of free time too to explore the beautiful Llŷn Peninsula, or maybe further afield to Anglesey or Eryri - there's something for everyone. 

What it means for us

For a small business like ours, an extra pair of hands goes a long way. There's always something that needs doing: huts to weatherproof before winter, fruit to pick for jam, hedgerows to keep in order, and the ongoing conservation work around the wildlife lake and ad hoc projects we have, such as tree planting or painting the barn. Having someone to share that load with, even for a short stay, makes a genuine difference to how much we can get done, and to how well we can look after the place in the process.

Why it fits how we think about our business

We run Brook Cottage as something closer to a smallholding than a hotel: growing our own vegetables, keeping chickens, sourcing from local suppliers, and living alongside nature. Sustainability here has never been a marketing line, it's how the place actually runs day to day. FarFrom feels like a natural extension of that: less about the transaction of a stay, more about the exchange of time, skill and a bit of trust.

It also speaks to something we care about beyond the practicalities of running a small site. We'd rather build something than simply sell something. A work-for-accommodation stay creates an opportunity that a standard booking doesn't: a chance for someone to spend real time in a place, contribute something to it, and leave having made a small difference rather than just having visited. That feels closer to what community actually means, in a rural spot like ours where community is often built through shared, practical effort rather than big gestures.

We like the idea of Brook Cottage being part of that in a small way, connecting people to this corner of the peninsula and to the work of keeping it going, rather than being just a place to stay for a few nights.

When these opportunities are available

We're offering FarFrom stays throughout the autumn, winter and spring, broadly from September through to April. The work will vary with the seasons and with whatever the site needs at the time: weatherproofing and log store stacking as autumn turns to winter, hedgerow and woodland work over the colder months, seed sowing and early growing jobs as spring comes in.

Whatever the season, there's always something practical to do - indoors or outdoors - and while previous experience can come in handy, there are opportunities to learn and develop practical skills and knowledge too.
