Four seasons in one day: how to love the Llŷn Peninsula whatever the weather

There’s a well-known saying about experiencing four seasons in one day. Here on the Llŷn Peninsula, we sometimes think it was probably invented for us.
You can wake to sea mist hanging over Yr Eifl, eat breakfast beside a still, silvery lake and, by lunchtime, find yourself walking a beach beneath brilliant blue skies. Of course, it can work the other way round too.
But that’s part of the magic of this wild corner of North Wales. The landscape changes with the weather - and some of the most beautiful days aren't necessarily the sunniest ones.
So don't wait for the perfect forecast. Pack for Pen Llŷn, come anyway and see what the day brings.
1. Don't wait for perfect weather
We understand the temptation to keep checking the forecast before a trip. But if there's one thing we've learned from living here, it's that forecasts rarely tell the whole story.
Rain can pass quickly. Mist lifts. A grey morning can produce a glorious afternoon, while dramatic clouds and sudden shafts of sunlight can make the mountains and coastline look extraordinary.
Our advice? Have a rough plan, but be prepared to change it. The Llŷn Peninsula rewards spontaneity.
2. Pack for Pen Llŷn, not the forecast
The secret to enjoying North Wales whatever the weather is surprisingly simple: bring the right clothes.
Layers are your friend. Lightweight technical or merino wool clothing works beautifully for walking, with a good waterproof jacket and sturdy footwear ready when conditions change. Add a warm jumper and thick socks for cooler evenings.
And if the forecast promises wall-to-wall sunshine? Pack the waterproof anyway.
You'll thank us.

3. When the sun shines, follow it
When blue skies appear, make the most of them.
Walk a stretch of the Wales Coast Path, head for the beach at Llanbedrog, explore Aberdaron or wander down to Porthdinllaen for one of the loveliest coastal views on the peninsula.
You don't need a complicated itinerary. One of the advantages of staying at Brook Cottage Shepherd Huts is our location: coast, countryside, beaches and mountains are all within easy reach, so you can simply decide what suits the day.
And in autumn, those quieter beaches can feel particularly special.
4. When it rains, don't write off the day
There are plenty of things to do on the Llŷn Peninsula when it rains.
Explore the fascinating history and heritage of Nant Gwrtheyrn, visit the gallery at Plas Glyn-y-Weddw, linger over lunch in a cosy café or spend the afternoon discovering some of the Llŷn Peninsula's independent food producers, farm shops and local treats.
And don't automatically abandon your walking boots. A gentle walk in soft rain can be wonderfully atmospheric - particularly when you know there's a warm hut waiting at the end of it.
The trick isn't avoiding the weather. It's choosing the right adventure for it.
5. Sometimes, staying in is the plan
This is where choosing your glamping accommodation carefully really matters.
Every one of our five luxury shepherd’s huts in North Wales has its own kitchen, en-suite shower room and toilet, comfortable bed and wood burner. So if the rain is drumming on the roof and the view has disappeared temporarily into the mist, you don't have to go anywhere.
Light the fire. Make coffee. Open a book. Cook something delicious. Watch the weather move across the lake.
Sometimes a rainy afternoon gives you permission to do precisely nothing - and that can turn out to be one of the best parts of the holiday.
6. And when the clouds clear, look up
The end of a rainy day can bring an unexpected reward.
As the clouds disappear and darkness falls, step outside. Our peaceful rural setting means there's very little artificial light competing with the night sky, and on a clear evening the stars can be spectacular.
Wrap up warm, sit beside your fire pit and look up.
There’s no wrong weather for the Llŷn Peninsula
At Brook Cottage, our five individually designed, adults-only shepherd’s huts sit within three acres of fields, woodland and water, overlooking our private wildlife lake towards Yr Eifl.
Sunny days bring beaches and coastal walks. Wild days bring crashing waves and dramatic skies. Misty mornings make the lake magical. Rain gives you an excellent excuse to light the wood burner before lunch.
And sometimes you'll get all four before dinner.
So if you're planning an autumn glamping break in North Wales, don't worry too much about what the weather might do.
Bring your boots. Pack your waterproof. Choose your hut.
Then come and discover how good Pen Llŷn can be - whatever the weather.
