Top 10 things to bring for the perfect glamping getaway

Glamping sits in a sweet spot between the freedom of the outdoors and the comfort of somewhere genuinely lovely to come back to. At Brook Cottage Shepherd Huts, the basics are taken care of - bedding, cooking equipment, locally made soaps and shampoos are all provided - but a few well-chosen additions will make your stay feel entirely your own. Here's what we'd suggest bringing.
1. Clothes you can layer
If you've spent any time in Wales before, you'll know the weather has a mind of its own: bright sunshine on the coastal path one hour, mist coming in from the Irish Sea the next. Layers are the only sensible answer: breathable tops for walking, a warm jumper for evenings by the log burner, and a waterproof for the days when the Llŷn Peninsula decides to be dramatic about it. Sturdy footwear is equally important if you're planning to make the most of the countryside and coastal paths nearby.
2. Outdoor essentials
A small day bag covers most adventures - coastal walks, castle ruins, a wander into Cricieth or Abersoch. If you're heading into Snowdonia for a longer day hike, a proper rucksack is worth the boot space. Either way, pack a refillable water bottle, sunscreen and a hat. Woolly or wide-brimmed, depending on what the season has in store.
3. A good book (or two, or three…)
Glamping has a way of creating time for reading that ordinary life rarely manages. A favourite novel that you've read a dozen times before, something you've been meaning to get to for months, or a thriller that demands to be finished in one sitting - all of them work. Read by the wildlife lake, in bed with a cup of tea, or on the porch as the evening settles in. There's no wrong answer.

4. Snacks and drinks
The Llŷn Peninsula has excellent local food worth seeking out, and we always encourage guests to sample it. But there's also something quietly pleasing about having your own provisions for the in-between moments - a bottle of wine for a sunset on the deck, your favourite tea for an early morning, a bar of good chocolate for a rainy afternoon. The huts have fully equipped kitchens, so you're well set up for whatever you feel like cooking.
5. Board games or a pack of cards
Screens have their place, but an evening around a table with a game and a drink is one of those simple pleasures that a shepherd hut holiday seems to bring back naturally. Scrabble, cards, something competitive enough to cause mild disagreement - all of it works well. No notifications, no algorithms, just good company and a log burner for atmosphere.
6. Your dog’s essentials
If you're joining us in Joan or Angharad - our two dog-friendly shepherd huts - don't forget your dog's bed, lead, favourite toy and a towel for muddy paws. We provide dog bowls and a little welcome gift for every canine guest, and as dog owners ourselves we know how much the small things matter. The countryside around Brook Cottage is everything a dog could reasonably ask for. They’ll love the freedom of the outdoors - and you’ll love knowing they’re just as relaxed and happy as you are.
7. Binoculars
A small addition to your bag that opens up a surprisingly different way of seeing the place. Brook Cottage's wildlife lake attracts kingfishers, herons and all manner of birds throughout the year, and the wider landscape around the Llŷn Peninsula rewards anyone who takes time to look carefully. Foxes through the hedgerows, red kites overhead, the occasional flash of something you can't quite identify - binoculars turn a walk into something more.
8. A camera or sketchbook
Not for content. For keeping. The morning mist over the fields, the curve of the coastline from a clifftop path, the quality of light over the Yr Eifl's peaks at the end of a clear day - these are the kind of views worth holding onto. A photograph or a sketch does that in a way a memory alone sometimes doesn't.

9. A relaxed mindset
This is a must. Luxury glamping in North Wales at its best is about slowing down enough to truly notice where you are - and that means letting go of the pace you arrived with. Brook Cottage is designed for exactly this. Give it a day, and it tends to do the rest.
10. A sense of curiosity
The Llŷn Peninsula has been drawing travellers, pilgrims and poets for centuries - Bardsey Island sits at its tip, Aberdaron is one of the most beautiful villages in Wales, and the Wales Coast Path offers as much or as little adventure as you're looking for. Come with an open mind: try the local food, learn a word or two of Welsh, follow a path you haven't planned. The small moments here have a habit of becoming the ones you remember.
And if you've forgotten something? Don't worry. We're ten minutes from local shops, and as a couple who've done our share of packing and forgetting, we're happy to lend things out if we can help!
